Career Choice: Helping the young mind decide

We recently organized a Career Choice Lecture in Padopads Harmony Secondary School Makurdi, Benue state, aimed at helping secondary school students navigate their career paths with confidence and clarity.

Addressing the Career Dilemma
Many students in these communities face significant challenges when it comes to choosing a career. Limited access to resources, a lack of career guidance, and societal pressures often leave them uncertain about their future. Our Career Choice Lecture sought to bridge this gap by providing them with the right information, motivation, and tools to make informed decisions.

Highlights of the Lecture
• Understanding Career Paths: Experts from various fields engaged the students in discussions on different career options, emphasizing the importance of aligning personal interests with career goals.
• Skill Development and Career Readiness: The session underscored the need for students to develop relevant skills beyond academics, including critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability.
• Breaking Stereotypes: The lecture encouraged students to explore unconventional career paths and not be limited by societal expectations.
• Interactive Q&A Sessions: Students had the opportunity to ask pressing questions and receive practical advice from professionals in different industries.

Guest Speakers: Learning from Experts
To provide students with real-world insights, we invited distinguished professionals to share their experiences and career journeys:
• Dr. Agweye Jeremiah (Medical Doctor): He spoke on the journey to becoming a doctor, the importance of dedication, and the fulfillment of saving lives.
• Barr. Garba Tavershima (Lawyer): He enlightened students on the legal profession, emphasizing justice, ethics, and the role of lawyers in society.
• Mr. Sefa Awen (Humanitarian Professional): He shared insights on working in the humanitarian sector, highlighting the impact of service and community development.

Impact and Takeaways
The response from students was overwhelmingly positive. Many expressed gratitude for the insights gained, with some stating that they now feel more confident about their career choices. The event also highlighted the need for continuous career guidance programs in schools, especially in marginalized areas.
At VEDI, we are committed to expanding such initiatives and ensuring that every young mind is empowered to make informed career decisions. We invite stakeholders, educators, and organizations to join us in this journey of shaping the future of young Nigerians.
VEDI would like to thank the management of Padopads Harmony Secondary School for the warm reception and for also providing an opportunity for the children to be a part of this initiative.
